I used audio playback to call in this bird. I have never had luck with audio on this species during the breeding season, but in migration, it's a different story. I will be making an announcement in my next newsletter on how I use different playback techniques for different species. This was taken on Thursday.

Very nice Alan. Did you use fill flash on this one? I only ask because it looks so well lit and you are shooting from under the bird. I would expect one without fill to have the sky blown out (or maybe it was a bit of an even/overcast day?). Just trying to figure out lighting situations from other photographer's capture to learn a bit more on how to get better!

Hey Miguel, no flash, just good morning light, good flight angle and the great dynamic range of the D4. Thanks.

Arresting image. It's good to see the possibilities of the 300 mm f2.8, the 1.4TC, and the D4. Nice and light with plenty of maneuverability to get shots like this one. I don't know whether the head needs more sharpening or whether IQ is an issue here; the head in any case is soft.
