    Default Juv Dunlin

Went looking for western sandpiper today on the Wirral at Hoylake, but the tide was out and too big an area to search. Settled for this lovely juv Dunlin. He seemed to have something wrong with him as he kept opening and closing his beak all the time as though he had something stuck in his throat. I think this pic looks like he is yawning after a long tiring day on the beach. I have loads of others but quite like this with his eyes closed and beak open.
Full frame shot. warmed up from 5000 to 5250, sharpened a little in ACR, slight touch of shadow/highlight adujustment and further sharpening with unsharp mask in PSE 10. cloned a couple of dust spots and where his legs touch the water it was a little blue looking so cloned out the blue water.
Canon 1DmkIV, Canon 500 f4 is + 1.4 = 700 focal length. Bean bag and angle finder, oh , and wet knees.
    ISO 640, 1/2000 sec. f 6.3

Very nice picture. I like the pose, light, colours and backgroud which compliment the bird nicely.

Sweet warm light quality. Love the intimate angle of view on the subject and the great pose. I'd bet he was trying to cough something up.
I see shorebirds do this infrequently...kind of like an owl hacking up a pellet. Frankly, I enjoy everything about the image except for the image
appearing to need a little clockwise rotation.

I liek the image, and I agree with Shawn's likely accurate decription of the behaviour (I've seen it happen, albeit very infrequently). The image does seem to need a bit of CW rotation, but I like the light, pose, colours, low angle, and processing.

Nice saturation both on your Dunlin and background Ivan, pretty obviouse the wet knees where worth the effort.

Very nice Ivan. Really like the colours and the open beak adds some interest.
