    Default 500II + 1.4X III Hand Held

    Attached Images Attached Images

DeSoto was awesome this morning. I decided to take it easy and left the car with only the 500 f/4L IS II, the 1D X, and both teleconverters. No tripod. Jim Neiger would have been proud of me. Just after 10am I headed back to my SUV. I was soaked from head to toe with sand all over me. And sand all over my new lens and new camera body. What fun.

This Caspian Tern was photographed with the Canon 500mm f/4L IS II lens, the 1.4X III TC, and the EOS-1D X.

Small crop after the bird was moved back in the frame.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

    Artie:

    Wow, no tripod!

I like the detail in the head, the good separation of the bill from the wing, exposure.

Just for personal taste, I might consider a 1/3 sliver of the free space off the top. The pose would work very well in a more pano crop.

    Cheers

I like Randy's suggestion regarding the crop on top. Very nice light all around and wing position. Did you use flash for this one?

Nice! No need to worry about the bill merging with the wing on this species...that bill just pops.
There is a noticeable dust sensor spot about 2 inches up from the right wing....

Hi Artie, love the slight curve of the wings from tip to tip, and overall well exposed. Good job hand holding the 500mm.

No 600 for me for now.... At times, when I needed to have the lens elevated for some period of time, I found it difficult to do so and to keep the lens perfectly steady. At 7.04 pounds compared to 8.65 pounds it is no contest for me, at least as far as hand holding. BTW, I have been thinking that if you went for the 1D X you would be illegal....

BTW, there's a great page for folks to bookmark here; it has all the specs for most of the Canon super-telephotos.

Here is the original. The bird was moved back in the frame using techniques from APTATS II. Thanks all for the comments. As for "a sliver off the top," a pano crop would of course be an option. But I like the crop in the original post: that's why I cropped it that way .

Ok, Arty said "don't be shy" so here goes - the only thing on interest to capture my attention is the Tern's head and it's far too small in frame to see in detail so, unfortunately it's not working for me.

Having said that, I could see it working very well as a fine print hanging on a wall.

Artie, I have a devil of a time finding dust sensor spots against blue sky backgrounds too.
One thing I will do if I suspect my sensor is getting dirty and I have not had a chance to
clean it is, while processing the image, use a levels adjustment to really darken the image,
like way darker than you would normally ever do it. Those dust sensor spots will jump out
at you when you do that. Then just mentally mark them, undo the levels, and clone em out :)
You probably already knew that approach, but maybe others do not.

Thanks Shawn. And thanks for your membership support. As far as dust spots, the automatic sensor cleaning is so good that it encourages me to get careless at times .

Not sure how low this fella was but it looks like the bright sand acted as a reflector to lighten the underside, which I like. Sounded like fun indeed...

Pops really nicely, Artie! Well done on leaving the tripod LOL
It does seem like the 1Dx will do the business for the Canon folks.

One squat to hop without any sandbags and I would be headed for my third knee surgery..... Cold tub with ice is even better. I am up to 40 minutes in a 57 degree tub up to my neck with four large soda bottles of ice on my chest. Cold thermogenisis; you gotta love it.

Yes to cold tub, I was thinking 64 degree San Francisco weather!

I forgot to mention, a nice shoulder massage is better than all of the above (it's even better in the cold tub )

Don't get excited Arash; it has nothing to do with releasing the shutter . It is a kind of deep tissue massage where they move the joint through its range of motion, often painfully
