Beautiful image - great light, pose, detail, exposure... And the contrast against the blue sea sets it all off very nicely!

    Thanks for sharing,

    Kerry:

Yeah, that guy does tend to get a bit dirty at times. Nicely exposed, sharp, great BG. I might lower the overall exposure by 1/3 of a stop or so.

It looks like there may be some sharpening halo around the birds right eye{ left as we look at it} and along the neck. Could just be variation in the background, but I don't think so.

Great to see the eyes so well, a real stare down.

    Cheers

Awesome stare-down and full head-on angle. The blue sea looks very appealing. The spiked 'do is pretty cool. The halo Randy mentions looks more like some dodging, or other lightening processing method, bleeding onto the BG.

Good point Daniel, I should have been more specific about the halo.

Now that is a neat head angle! Absolutely awesome details. And yes, I agree that the image is on the vivid side, but I think it works well here (at least for me)

Beautiful bird, beautiful light, and love the head angle. The face looks a tiny bit jangly/over-sharpened from here. Even though I love this image I'd have liked it more if you got about 3-4 inches higher. Why?

Thanks all, appreciate the comments! Artie, I'm thinking you are seeing the shadow of the end of the bill.

Nope. Not the shadow. And getting higher would have made the shadow longer, no?

To get rid of that dark band merging with the top of the head?

Getting higher would not change the length of the shadow because the angle of the light source the bird are not changing, right? So it would also have the added benefit that Kerry mentioned of reducing or hiding the shadow.

I am not sure on the length of the shadow but there is a good chance that I am wrong. But you are 100% correct on the merge of the dark band of Pacific with the top of the bird's head. Well done. And welcome to BPN.
