    Default Hello from Central Oregon

    Hi everyone:

I'm new to photography - bought my first camera about 18 months ago (thought it might be a good way to learn how to see again). Then about 8 months ago, I picked up a 300mm f/4 lens and discovered that I liked photographing birds -- and learned they're very beautiful, painfully camera shy and - for bird brains - amazingly adept at outwitting me.

Look forward to meeting you all, and learning, learning, learning...

    cheers,
    gareth (gt)

A big welcome to BPN, Gareth. Glad to hear you have become interested in bird photography. BPN is a great place to learn. When I began bird photography, my first 2 years, my main lens was the 300 F4 and I was extremely happy. I used the Canon 1.4 teleconverter an aweful lot with it too.

You will find lots of great information in the Eager to Learn forum but don't be shy in the Avian forum. The more you spend time reviewing pictures and critiques, and offering up your own critiques, the quicker you will learn.

    Happy shooting.

    Welcome Gareth!
BPN is a great place to learn. If you haven't done so already, pick up a copy of Art Morris' Softbound bird photography book, and the follow on CD book (they aren't the same material). You'll learn a lot from them.

If you are up this way the first Thursday of the month, there is a meeting at the Tualatin River NWR of photographers -- many who do birds (and general nature as well).

Thank you both for the lovely welcome, and enjoy your visit to Oregon, Denise.

By the way, if you've never been introduced to Mary Oliver - you might like her; she's a poet who writes about the natural world, including birds (e.g., Wild Geese, White Owl Flies Into and Out of the Field, Gannets, Goldfinches).
