Oh my heavens. That is one smokin' image. I love that dramatic pose, the position and details in its left wing, the Intense stare and the lovely varied background. Just superb.

    Hi Jim,
    This is awesome.
I love the light and the tight crop.
The BG colors are great and really compliment the bird.

Awesome image Jim! Super HA and sharpness! How was the AF with the TC on? What do you think of the 300 f/2.8 II for birds in flight on a body like 7D?

Not sure I can add much to others' comments - just a great intense look in those eyes. I'd add a bit more room on the right side if possible.

The extenders slow down AF, but fast AF is not that critical for photographing BIF. Slow AF can be overcome by proper technique. I think a high frame rate is more important than AF speed up to a point. Using a 2x is a bit difficult. Using a 1.4x is no problem with proper technique.

Thanks for your reply Jim. I cant decide between the 300 2.8 II and the 500 f/4 II. Wondering if I could get away with the 300 plus extenders combo since it is lighter and less expensive. What's your opinion?
