Default "You must know everything," quoth the phoebe

A VERY silly title for this picture, which was originally of the horizontal persuasion and whose sides have been cropped away. Taken with the Canon 7D and 70-300L at 300mm. iso800, 1/1000, 5.6...
I spent some good time with this e. phoebe over a couple of mornings last week. I did not manage any midair flycatching shots, I'm afraid. I will welcome your thoughts and opinions and constructions and reprimands! I hope all is well with each one of you...the autumn is here, mostly...I am seeing warblers I cannot identify and the temperatures are cooling...I am happy again...

Gentlemen, ladies, I was SLIGHTLY troubled by the line of background blur rising upwards from atop the phoebe's beak and so hastily created this alternate version. Why hastily? I have obligations today that are not even bird-related. Obviously I feel terrible about that! Also obviously I'll go back to the original if I really want to do this, so do forgive the sloppiness. That said: I'll be glad to hear your preference, if you have one? And thank you!

    Hi Jack,
This is a great pose and the light is lovely.
The IQ is really good as well.
I would keep the vertical comp but a bit tighter on the left and top. That would get rid of a lot of the black in the ULC and tends to draw the eye away.
    Well done,
    Gail

Thanks Gail, that's a good tip. I will investigate further!

Love the open beak. The strong IQ of the subject allows a tight crop as suggested by Gail.

I like what you did for the repost. I agree with Gail about removing (or toning down) the black in the bg. I would also consider just a bit of noise reduction in the bg. The bird looks great!
