I have never been so close to a Canvasback. I see them every winter at Burlinton Bay butthey are always way out.
I did some substantial cleaning of the ground arond and behind the bird, to make it more presentable.
    Thanks for looking.

    Karl,

I still do not have a photo of a canvasback and I know how good it feels to finally get that first one. Congratulations. I like the color of the background with this bird. I would prefer more space at the top and less on the bottom.

What a neat opportunity you had here, Karl. I really like the complementary colors of the canvasback and the ground. Great head angle and eye contact. I like the comp but could also see an alternate version as Laurie describes.

    Thanks Laurie, thanks Melissa.
Here is the version, having less canvas at the bottom and more on the top.

Repost is much more pleasing to the eye. Well done, Karl, and a nice, calm pose on this duck.

    Thanks Artie.
No flash, as it was a hand held shot. I like to use the fill flash on a Wimberley arm.

Thanks Karl. Amazing detail and a perfect EXP looked like flash. I say often, "With digital, who needs flash?"

Thanks Artie, again. Your compliment makes me feel pretty good about this image.
One day I might be able to take one shot of a swimming one.

Karl, amazing! Where in the world did you find this landbound beauty? A lovely shot on all counts. I've gotten close to a female at the Leslie Spit, but only once, and that was because some bozo was feeding the resident trumpeters...the canvasback, curious, got within FIVE FEET of me and it was shortly after that that it occurred to me to perhaps start taking pictures of birds...it was the feathers that made me fall in love...

Excellent re-post. Like that one feather sticking out to the left, the detail, of course their cool eye and look on the face.

Great image Karl! I like the composition in the repost, sharpness, details and eye.
