At Elephant plains on the last morning we stopped for coffee and rusks. The hornbills joined us and a few scraps were thrown to them. It was quite overcast so I had to up the ISO. I took this while in the prone position.

nice colors and BG, colors look pretty good for overcast condition. Main issue here is motion blur in the head, I would have fully opened the aperture for more SS. TFS

    Jan,

Arash has hit the nail on the head here, a shortage of shutter speed. A great pity because this would have been a stupendous shot with a little more freeze, can I ask why you were using F11?

    Ken,

They were mighty close so I was mindful of the thin depth of field.

    Jan:

Great colors, fun action, well exposed, but Arash brought up the issue here, too much motion blur.

I shoot to freeze action first, worry about DOF second.

    Cheers

great capture, but it would have been that much nicer with a faster shutter speed.

Pose, colors, bg and camera position are all looking great. The darn motion blur does muck things up and the closer the bird is to the camera the more pronounced motion is. As it is I would remove the small stick entering frame on the bottom edge.

Excellent suggestion by Arash. 1/1250 sec. would have frozen the action nicely.... Getting just a bit lower would have given you a complete green background.

Nice angle and composition on this close portrait. The slight blur on the end of the beak helps portray movement IMHO

So these come close to get the Rusk biscuits ?

Nice action, comp, colors. You positioned yourself very well here. agreed that opening up some more to get that extra SS would have been a better tradeoff to make.

Nice picture Jan, but I fully agree with Arash on using higher shutter speed.
I go up to ISO 1600 many times to get the right speed with Mark IV.
Also I'm not sure if you need f 11. I just checked that the "soft spot" of your lens is at f 8.0 as per Photozone.

I like it as is, but more ss wouldn't hurt either. Lovely species, killer BG and eye. Keep them coming man!

As others mention, do not hesitate to open up the aperture...if the eye is sharp most of the time it then doesn't matter where the DOF falls off after that (IMO). I'm almost always at f/6.3 with that lens, and not afraid to go all the way open if needed. Apart from the SS issue the image is well composed, exposed, and processed...
