I created this image of a male Red-winged Blackbird this evening in Sackville, NB. The males have been back now for a couple of weeks but no sign of the females yet. I cloned out a dead cattail to the right of the bird but decided to leave the other one farther to the right because is it so out of focus.
Whoaaaa, the RWBB got a flat head haircut :)
Interesting head angle. I think it needs a bit of CW rotation. tiny bit, bird seems to be leaning to the left. Great light and compo. Good blacks and nice catch light!
Hi John,
If your birds are anything like the ones I've been photographing for the last couple of months, you'll have plenty more opportunites for "shots on stalks". I agree with Fabs on the CW rotation. The flatness of his head being off line with the top of the frame accentuates the angle. I also agree with cloning out the stalk on the right. The dark edge lines bring it a little more attention than just an OOF stalk. I like the backward looking pose and theh cattail cutting across the frame on the diagonal.

Liked it better with the cat-tail. Good on the rotation. Notice that simply be working on a jpeg and resaving it the colors look darker, the image a bit more contrasty. Sometimes this is good, sometimes not. Here I like the softer tones of the ORIG. Biggest problem for me: too much of a head turn. All in all, nice image.
