    Default Ostrich Chick

There is a nature reserve close to my house, and now and again I return home with interesting images. I came across a family of Ostriches early one morning, Mom, Dad, and two chicks. I drove ahead of them and captured some images as they were walking towards me. When young, their plumage is fairly spikey, thus I was tender on the sharpening, as the plumage becomes crispy.

    Excellent comp and pose.
    Exposure is excellent as well.
I think this image really shows the powerful legs well.
But my oh my, they are ugly!!A face only a mother could love!!

    Stuart:

Nice framing, angle in the frame, sharpeness (agree about oversharpening young plumage), exposure.

They sure do look like they are made up of spare parts!

Very nice Stuart! I know that you were shooting out of your car, but in retrospect, it would have been nice to get just a bit higher so that the bg near the head would have been green.

Stuart - I saw quite a few of these on my recent trip but always at too far a distance to photograph. This is really well done. IQ, light, comp all are excellent, as usual.

Thanks a stack for comments everyone. Strange, I never thought of them as ugly - maybe as I see them fairly often.

Me neither, I wish I had a decent image of a Maribu Stork chick to share, now that is ugly

Wonderful shot. I really like the pose, great comp, and excellent details. Have never seen a young ostrich before, till now. I think the young one are a lot better looking than the adult ones. :)
    Well done.

Spot on Stu, love the angle and the catchlight, as ever sharpness and exposure etc optimal. Ugly, not too sure - I mean he's just a bit cute really isn't he??!!
