The green herons that I have been photographing for the past two weeks are still hanging around but not finding the nice big fish anymore. It must be almost time to move south and time for me to find something else to photograph.

Cropped 5% from bottom and right. Used curves white balance adjustment - hope I got it right this time.

    Great pose and perch.
A very lucky opportunity you have had. I can never get close.
I like the shadow behind the bird.

Excellent image. I love this long necked pose. I wonder why they do this sometimes.

    Karl,

There are about 6 herons at this location and they are constantly defending their perch. I think this guy was watching for another heron. On this morning they spent more time chasing each other off that fishing.

Love the personality that you have captured here. Sweet raise crest.
One of the most elongated necks I've seen on a green heron image....full extension.
It's a beautiful image. Would not mind a lower angle, (if possible), I don't think
    the shadow adds much here.

Laurie, these green heron pictures have been wonderful. Such a fine opportunity you've had! I like this one very much...a great pose from our friend, and the water color is very pleasing. I like the small shadow, too...

Another super green heron image from you, Laurie. I really like the alert pose, the raised crest, the beautiful water, and that shadow in the corner.

Very nice posture you captured! A bit lower of an angle would have been great, but this is certainly stunning.

What a super pose you captured here, Laurie. It's quirky and comical. I think your angle worked well for you, and the heron's angle is awesome. At F9 I am wondering why I don't see more details in your neck feathers for instance. Did you use a lot of NR by any chance?

    Marina,

I did not use any noise reduction on the bird, just a little on the background. Could it be that he was fluffing up the feathers on his neck or motion because he was moving his head up and down - although I would think the speed was fast enough to take care of that.

I was set up on the bank of the lake, sitting on the ground with my sack blind on in front of a tree that was laying in the water (thanks to a beaver) with several perches for the herons to land on. Some perches were close to the water (like this one) and some were the same level that I was on. Most were not photographable. I liked this perch the best because it was close to the water and offered the most action. Getting at water level meant wading in a very polluted lake and probably would not have worked because I do not have a water blind.

very nice pose and great light. I agree with Marina re detail in the neck and head area, was the RAW sharp in those areas?
