Folks I very much enjoyed watching the adult red-necked grebe make multiple attempts at feeding an oversized piece of seafood to his hapless progeny! Back and forth, back and forth...this went on for several minutes. In the end, the adult gave up on the child and ate the thing himself! Or, herself. I don't know. Anyhow, this picture was taken with the Canon 7D and 70-300L at 300mm. iso640, 1/800, 5.6...ah, I certainly would have loved a longer lens on this fine evening. You are looking at approximately 50% of the original capture. Ah well! Something is always better than nothing, is it not? Please share your thoughts with me, fine folks?

Nice story, sounds like real life. The sad look on the juvie's face - if I can project that - is adorable. I like the crop and the quality looks good for a 50% crop. You do know that there is never enough lens unless there is to much!

Ha! I do all my birdwatching and photography by foot or transit and for those and other reasons a larger lens is out of the question. But next time I'll bring my 400mm...every little bit helps, you're quite right...

    Jack,
Excellent action captured.Love both mom and chick, nice ripples in water and as Laurie said expression of chick.
I have seen similar situation where Grey Heron caught big fish,he tried to engulf it for 7-8 minutes but could not and finally gave the fish to crow.

    Regards,
    Satish.

Very nice capture and neat story. Great detail for a 50% crop.

Thanks, folks...I'm impressed with the 70-300's quality, although of course I pine for an updated 100-400...I talk about my pineful feelings for that imaginary lens too often...

Jack, you are putting the lens to good use and with limited reach you have already made some nice images...I like the interaction here and nice eye contact. 100-400 is definitely a good option.

Me too. I like your image & the fact that both eyes are visible. I also enjoyed your tale.

    Hello Jack.
Very nice shot. Great timing on getting the adult bird trying to swallow that fish and great comp.
    Well done.

Jack, I would prefer a lower angle here and your IQ has suffered from the crop. Nice snap shot.

Ladies and gentlemen, I've been "dissed"! Snap shot, ouch, it stings! Moving on, I'll mention that getting lower would have been impossible because of the slope and treacherous rocks in between me and the grebes. A little bit of context for the fine folks...

I would buy the new 100-400 or a 400 f5.6 with IS in a minute. The only lens missing from my line up as I sold the 400 f5.6 L.
About your picture; it is very nice, like the interaction and the nice light Jack. Was taken it in Oakville?

Thanks Karl, and yes indeed, those are the Bronte grebes. I was very lucky to watch all sorts of happy interaction, and wished I'd brought my 400 5.6 along...I think many of us would be after those lenses you mentioned...Canon will do what Canon does...it's all very mysterious to me...but of course this is a subject we've addressed on many occasions elsewhere in this forum...

It was fun shooting there this year. Let's hope they will be around next year as well and we will have the one if the 400 lenses by then.
