Default Cali, Valle de Cauca, Colombia

Give Cali, Valle de Cauca, Colombia a look and be reminded that Colombia has more bird species than any other country in the world. There are a number of great birding, bird photography destinations near the city. Cali lies in the valley of Cauca, bisected by the Cauca river, at an altitude of 3,280 feet (1000 meters). The area known as Dapa begins fifteen minutes north of the city limits and ranges from city level to nearly 7,000 feet (2100 meters). The highest point can be reached in a 45 minute drive. The Dapa area has more than 250 species that include five endemics and an equal number of near endemics. The list also includes nearly thirty species of hummingbirds. The highlight of the five endemics is the Multicolored Tanager. Lodging at private fincas (country properties) is available. At least four are owned by bird enthusiast, English speaking North Americans. Bosque de Niebla San Antonio reserve is at kilometer 18 on the Cali to Buenaventura highway and offers the same birds as Dapa. Some other day trips from Cali include Laguna de Sonso a vast marsh reserve along the Rio Cauca an hours drive north of the city, a Cock of the Rock lek in the Fallarones de Cali Reserve an hours drive west of the city then three hour walk where the males are amazingly easy to see and photograph between 3:00 pm and dark and San Cipriano located near Buenaventura, about an hour and forty five minute drive from Cali. This is on the Pacific side or the Western Cordillera and offers a whole different range of species. For specific species information/location go to Valle de Cauca department at Dataves Colombia: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/

Thanks for that. There are so many excellent birding / bird photography spots that some locations and countries may not be thought of...this is one of them.
