    Default Foggy morning juvi loon

This juvi loon was by himself on a quiet back bay on a very foggy morning. I had to wait quite awhile before I could see him well enough to shoot.

Post: Selective sharpening on the bird. Cleaned up a second catchlight on the pupil, rotated to level with resultant modest crop

    Advice and comments always appreciated.

nice pose and low angle. soft light + good details. On my screen it looks a bit washed out (needs a contrast boost)

    Arash:

It was a foggy morning, and I wanted to maintain that feel, so left it a bit low in contrast. Yes, it would jump more with more contrast, but not my intent with this one. I should have mentioned my goal with this image.

    Thanks for the comment.

    Cheers

I really love the mood you have created here, Randy. The colors work, as do the slight ripples in the water and the slightly open beak. You have nice details in the feathers and a very clear eye. It seems you realized your goal with this one.

Hi Randy, thanks for the feedback on my loon image. This is a real beauty complimented so well by the soft pastel tones.

Down with contrast! The image is beautiful as is and the soft sweetness here "really works for me" and I am more than impressed! You posted another similar picture in the not-too-distant past that also featured the pastel loveliness and the fog, I think?

When we see an image taken in harsh light we usually suggest some more processing to fix the "problematic" light. Personally, I feel that images such as this belong to the same category. IMHO this kind of light in a foggy day is also "problematic" and I don't find anything attractive or "artistic" in the dull colours and lack of contrast and detail. This is of course just my personal taste.

Hi Randy, I can just visualise you and this Juvi all by yourselves, enjoying the serenity. Lovely pose, and a nice pano crop to suit. Its the splash of colours in the BG that make this, and good to see the droplets on the back.

Lovely. Another vote of appreciation for the soft pastel look.

I like the diffused light caused by the fog. Adorable little subject and great low POV.

Hi Randy, love the 'ethereal' feel/quality to the image. There is a nice softness to it, with the dappled light and the misty morning brings a difference to this image. The processing has been handle with the same delicacy the image portrays. I'm a sucker for these low level POV's and the slight head turn just adds to the image. The only thing I might suggest would be a slight reduction in the blue with a selective mask on the plumage and reflection, but this could well be the true colouring, so will bow to your judgement Randy.

Nice to view on a very wet, saturday morning.

Like the shot Randy because it has a natural look about it. The low angle and seamingly soft focus becasue of the fog gives it that little bit different than normal shot.

Randy - the mood/feel/softness jumped out at me (in a good way). Love the ethereal feel as Steve noted.
I think we need to back down on the temptation to adjust contrast and saturation with every image - shots like this have great appeal to me too.
I would also reduce the blue in the plumage. Killer low angle.

This is lovely Randy. If you had not mentioned the fog I would not have noticed anything here. I love the soft feel and light. I am sure the image has been affected by the fog but IMO in a positive way. I ran some colour correction in the image using the method outlined here:

    and it worked very well.

A beautiful image so serene. The eye contact pose and the very few ripples enhances the bird without taking my eye from the picture as a whole.
