I work on a beautiful island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence called Bonaventure Island. It is home to 50,000 pairs of Northern Gannets but also houses several Red Foxes. They have been particularly active this year in the gannet colony but often you see them just doing what comes naturally to a fox.

Here I wanted the animal to be in its boreal habitat and it obliged by going off the trail and eventually lying down for a snooze.

Full frame (just remembered I shaved a little off the left, top and bottom). Environment cleaned up a little. Resampled and sharpened.

Good to see you posting here John!
I love this (I'm a sucker for animal-in-environment shots)...love the framing with the tree on LHS and mound on RHS.
Nice wet look and alert pose too. In an "ideal forest" the fallen log would not have been behind him

Thanks guys! The island is a park and they just let the trees fall so it is part of the environment. But I agree I'd rather have tree not there!

Hi John, great to see you spreading your wings and popping over to this side.

Love it, nice rich, vibrant habitat/environment feel to this, great placement with the subject (looks a little wet?), crop compliments the image well. Great to view.

What a pleasing animal in habitat capture you have here, John. I love the trunk anchoring the photo on the left and the mount on the right. The fallen tree works for me too b/c it adds a lot of character to the environment. The greens are vibrant. Love how the fox is a tad hidden behind some vegetation and his tail is quite powerful here. Top notch and happy to see you posting here!!!

Thank you everyone. In eastern Canada we get precious few opportunities to photograph mammals. We don't have herds of caribou or many other "big game" you might associate with NA. We do have moose and white-tailed deer and the latter at least are pretty accessible. Wolves don't occur here any more. So, it's a real treat to see and photograph a wild canid like a Red Fox.
