This newborn White-tailed Deer was photographed within 24 hours of its birth at Myakka River State Park under the canopy. It also had a twin which was bedded down a few yards away. You can see how tiny it is in relation to its environment and how it's hind quarters are still a bit rickety.

Every hour or so, the fawn would rise, stretch and lie back down in a different position and spot. This capture was taken during one of those small windows. Nothing has been altered. It was a difficult shoot in very low light under a thick canopy.

What a true joy these babies were to watch. Later in the day, the doe and probably an off spring from the previous year came and moved the fawns one at a time, as they often do in the first 2 weeks.

Hi Marina, outstanding techs at 1/60, but it's the scale I just can't get my head round, I know they are tiny, but this one looks almost miniature in scale.

I love that 'Bambie' look & expression and having the catchlight works a treat. Looks like the light was on your side, coming in on the left, but not too harsh to blow the whites. The dappled coat is perfect. Personally I might drop the yellow say by -10, add a couple of points in the black of both the Neutrals & Black and then I think it could take just a couple of small amounts of selective sharpening on the subject, but just my take. A very sweet image in a lovely environment/habitat. A nice image to end, well for me, the weekend on.

    Gorgeous image Marina!
Here is a repost with some boost in levels and colours and cropping a bit off the top and bottom.

Great job Marina, and whatever process you used to bring out the color in the eyes should be commended as well.
Are you in the Keys? I know that subspecies is the smallest whitetail but that's a real little guy/gal.
I like Offer's crop but depends on your taste, whatever it's a great shot.

    Hi Stan:

The smallest deer species in Florida is actually the Key Deer which is found in the Florida Keys. There is actually a key named after them. This is a one-day old White-tailed Deer photographed in Sarasota, FL at Myakka River State Park. I actually didn't make any adjustments to the fawn's eye. They are all born with the prettiest baby blue eyes, and I was lucky that the light allowed for a good look at it.

I like what Ofer has done with the color of the fawn. However, I have to opt for my crop b/c the wider crop accentuates how teensy-weensy the fawn actually is. I also didn't want to crop the leaf on the left bottom. I am told when these fawns are first born they can fit into a shoe box.

Here's a picture of the fawn inspecting my friend. He said it was difficult to resist petting it b/c its was so cute. The fawn sniffed him and his tripod...then he returned for another snooze.

Obviously one of those lawn ornaments you can buy at the hardware store. Can't be that cute, tiny, and still enough to pose for a shot . Like the overall color palette, the contrast of the spots and blue eyes, and the inclusion of the dried palm fronds for sense of size.

This is so amazing ,Marina ! The cutest little thing I have ever witnessed.Well done for having captured this and showing the minute scale of it.
In Southern Africa we have the Dik Dik ,which is our smallest buck.It is however gigantic compared to your little guy.

    Hi Marina,
Looking again at the two versions - I do prefer your crop.

I prefer Ofer's "pop" but Marina's crop (hey, there's a rhyme in there somewhere! )

Arno - off topic, but isn't the Red Duiker the smallest?
