    This was my first time getting close enough to one for a decent shot.

    These guys or gals in this case really are skittish. I like the eye contact but it would have been stronger with the sun behind you. The whites are a bit overexposed and the shadows quite dark. Could you post some techs? If it is RAW you could try use curves and 'recover highlights'.

    You must have had very strong light, because he contrast is really high. If you can mask the whites, thy to lighten the image a bit.
