Default A young great blue heron in the water: an opinion poll

Good folks, I'm submitting this picture for your critique but mostly I'm showing it because I'd like to take an opinion poll, if you'll permit me? Even if you detest this photograph, I'd like to know if you prefer the full-frame version or the cropped version. It would mean so much to me! The picture was taken with the Canon 7D and 70-200 f4 at 70mm. 1/1600, f6.3, iso320. Thank you in advance for your considered and considerate opinions! I shall post the cropped version in panel #2...

and here, for your pious perusal, is the cropped version, without the stonewall atop and with the branches removed...

    Hi Jack,
I prefer the cropped version. In the original, my eyes are drawn to the branches.

    Jack,

I think the reflection of the trees frame the bird better in the cropped version where the wall reflection detracts in the original.

Thanks, folks. I'll add that this picture is VERY far from a favorite of mine, and I'd like it much more if the heron were putting on a display, as they are wont to do, but some sucker wants to buy it ($$$$ har har har) and as such I'm looking for cropping opinions from the excellent folks on this forum. Many thanks Karen & Laurie, I agree with you...

A third vote for the crop, Jack.

I just don't think this works Jack. I see you are trying to get the reflection in the shot, but the bird is so tall and thin that it results in way too much negative space. It may have been more interesting if the bird had moved a little closer to you so that it was framed in the reflection of the treeline (but I would still have cropped out the bird's reflection).

I'm not sure that it works either, Jeff. Thanks for writing in...

If I may make a suggestion using an example and trying to look a bit arty as well............plus a slight color correction

Very nice Phil...I took some shots that look very much like this by zooming in all the way. I really appreciate your taking the time. Nice work, Captain!

You're welcome Jack, I'm not sure I should tinker with someone elses images, a lot of folk frown upon it, but glad you seem OK with it. I sorta thought it looked good as it brought a lot more attention to the nice reflection

I will keep the original.Reasons:there are no other elements which can distract your attention other than branches and stone wall reflection,( IMHO) these are elements giving 3D effects to the image and not engaging you all around.
If you look at the thumb nail images of both, you can see the difference.

    Regards,
    Satish.

Satish: you are a man after my own heart and I like your ideas. The unusual person who has requested a print of this image also decided they wanted the uncropped version. Different strokes, I say. Many thanks, fine folks, for writing in. In the future I'll post images in which I have more confidence! I shall introduce them thusly: "the following image is kickass!" That last word will come out like *** methinks. Hmmm. Surprise!
