    Default Hairy Woodpecker

Here is a "bird on a stick" image. The Hairy Woodpecker is on a perch set up near my bird feeders, early evening, cloudy.

Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 300mm f4 L IS, ISO 800, f4.5, 1/1250, +1/3 exp. comp., porch rail for support.

    Suggestions & comments most appreciated.

Hi Nancy, good exposure on the blacks, and I like your choice of comp. I like how the woodpecker is perched vertically, and would have maybe allowed more room below to see the join of the two 'perches'.

Or better yet, cut off the rear part of the perch and move the bird back in the frame. See you in South America!

I was wondering about that back perch. The 2 perches join too far down to include in the frame. So I'll move the bird.

    Artie, I'm looking forward to a penguin-fest!

Repost looks much better with the second branch gone. Nice vertical comp. With some reflections visible in the eye I do not see the need for an added catchlight. I only wish for more separation between bill and perch. Well done Nancy!

Repost is nice and a great bird.
I think the head could be sharpened a bit.
Very nice pose and vertical perch.

    Hi Nancy
I liked the original as the additional perch gave a V shape to the composition and provided balance to the image as a whole

    Lovely shot

Thank you all for your suggestions and comments. And Dan, as I look at this again, I agree a bit more sharpening on the head. Andre, thanks for your vote for the original image. You have voiced my thoughts exactly when I first processed the image. But I also like it without the 2nd perch.
