    Default Cow Moose

This is a different Cow Moose. Her calf was partialy hidden in the woods from us. We could see it, and it could see us. But mom sent it in the woods to see if we were a threat. When she could tell we were not, it came back out. Since we really wanted a big bull moone, we left after a quick image.

Hi Grady, firstly can you tell me what is the correct name for the 'item' that hangs just under the throat, is it a bell, as I understand this does get bigger as the moose ages?

Regarding the image, this certainly works better than the previous because of the separation between subject & BKG. Obviously you have more detail & clarity, however I take my hat off to you 1/60sec HH. I might have opened up and shot wide open just to increase SS, as thens is really good and works well in those conditions. There is nice detail, but again, I think you could apply some more selective sharpening. I would be tempted to selectively open up the darker/shadow areas more just to let some of the detail come through. In addition to the placement within frame, I get the feeling the subject is just running out of view, if you have it, then extending the crop to the right, well moving the whole crop right would be better, as the subject then has space, or, you could just simply extend the BKG if you wish. I like the B/W, good call. No need for me to add a RP, I think you will have got my drift.

Some more info. It was hand held, but I used Arties Blubb on my window while sitting in the drivers seat. We were facing North by NW with the sun coming up on our left side just over the tree tops. So it was much better light than the other image. I have cropped the right side to eliminate a very distracting branch hanging from the top right side. The bell does get bigger with age, both sexes have it. The males will have a loger one. This cow moose was about 800 lbs and only about 25 feet from our vehicle.

Hers is a full frame with some different adjustments Steve.

    Hey Grady, great.

The additional info certainly I think, adds to the story and is very helpful IMHO. In relation to the RP I think that is far better and I like the branches coming in, it adds to the image and breaks up the BKG nicely, has more of a 'reality feel' if you know what I mean. From a tonal POV I was somewhere between the two, but all personal preference. Appreciate the RP, thanks.

    Grady,

Of the two I prefer the OP as it has a more old fashioned B & W look, which in my opinion adds a lot.

B/W conversion looks good. Prefer the RP for the little extra room in front. Branches coming in give a sense that she's browsing.
