I picked up my 1D Mark IV on tuesday, and as yesterday was a holiday, I decided to try it out. I went to my local pond in Pretoria and came away with this Yellow-billed Duck. Im looking forward to shooting with it, as it is a big step up from my 50D.

Gorgeous, Stuart. How are you finding the 1.3 vs 1.6 crop factor?

Congratulations on the new toy. I used to like my 50D but I LOVE my 1D MIV.
As far as the picture goes, it is a great BIF image, Stuart.

Thank you all so much everyone.

Jack. I have only had one shoot with the MK IV, but I did notice the lesser crop factor after downloading. I feel over time that I will get used to it.

Dumay. After selling my house, wife and kids, I didnt have change to add another lens. If I had the money, I would probably go for the newer 500mm or 600mm, but in all honesty, I cant really see that ever happening - we all wish for nicer things.

    Stuart:

Congrats. I know you will make it sing.

I like the image on all accounts, pose, techs, etc. The water is so nice, I could see a bit more canvas all the way around, just personal taste.

    Cheers

Congratulations Stu on new toy...it will shine in your hands...How does IQ holds when you crop more than what you used to do with your 50D?

Well done Stuart and congrats on the first shot with your new camera - remember you cant buy talent, and since you already have that dont worry about that lens

No worries, Im in the same boat. I had to sell my 500 but what can you do....Priorities. I just thought that the 400 (General use) would make more sense for birds and if you added the new 1.4 TCIII you would still get AF (Faster than the previous generation) at f8 when the reach is necessary and due to the higher ISO performance of the MKIV you could push it up to make up for loss of aperture. If you can do BIF with the 100-400 you surely could do it with the 400 f5.6 and the 1.4 ext III combo...Just a thought... I tried the combo on my 1DMKIII and TC II and the AF was similar or maybe marginally slower than the 100-400 but the results and IQ were ver good.

Great start, Stu. I've been looking forward to seeing a shot since I heard that you finally had the MkIV. Great to have a venue like AR close to home to do some testing.
