I tried linking the image last week but it didn't work and it looks now that I have time to attend to it, the thread was removed. Never mind, trying again.

Reasonably common Sydney wetlands, park ponds, type of bird.( Porphyrio porphyrio ) Still not an easy one to get close to.

I cropped about 30% off the edges, as the negative space was too boring and this crop gave me a better portrait, or so I think.

Very pretty portrait. The somewhat unusual composition really works for me. I think there's room for a little more sharpness in the head, but otherwise an excellent photo. Maybe something more like this.

More I look at this portrait more I like it, especially the use of the BG.
    Love the original composition.
    Great work, Akos.

You managed to get up close and personal with this swamphen Akos!!
A nice head study but I think including just a little more head/neck on the right side (viewer's right) would enhance this composition. Love that eye!!
What camera gear were you using for this capture?

I think I cropped close so that the negative space outside the plumage is not showing. Otherwise it may destract from the image itself. I'll have a lookie and see how much extra I could squeeze in there. :)

Sorry, I though that the image deatils it should be in the image EXIF data. 30D, 300/4 L IS with a 1.4x and most probably the 430EX with a BB.

    Cheers and thanks!

Nice portrait, I think the extra sharpening worked, also I might have been tempted to do some selective burning on the forehead.

I wish I knew about quick masking and burning and dodging, but it sounds scary. I know Doug Brown sent me a QM link, but I never had the chance to try so far. :(

Hi Áki, I missed some of your latest work but this one I really like. Something different than a traditional portrait.
    How are you doing anyway?
