    Default Slamming Salmon

This is one of 20 bears we had slamming salmon in every direction. It was a day I and those with me will never forget. I am looking forward to photographing Spirit bears next month.
I was in waders with the camera on a tripod with just inches above the water. At times we had to be careful the splash wake would not swamp the gear.

After shooting now for 3 weeks with the 1DX I can say without a doubt the 1DX is the best AF camera I have eve used. The speed of acquisition is second to none, and the percentage of tack sharp images exceeds all cameras I have used in the past. ISO 800 can be used without hesitation and noise reduction. ISO 1600 is outstanding opening up a whole new world for this photographer. I do wish for the RED AF in AI Servo. The new ergonomics take a bit of getting used to coming from IDs 3 and MIV bodies. Those familiar with the 7D may find the transition easier. Much of what I do depends on capturing fleeting moments, switching camera settings in field from 5D3 to the 1DX requires a bit of thought. I have always had similar 1D bodies, making the transition seamless. I will most likely sell the 5D3 with grip and purchase another 1DX when funds loosen up again.

See you where there is light, or at the computer,

    Chas,

I have seen this behaviour before on the TV, but never captured on camera, this is truly wonderful, big congratulations.

Now if only it would stop raining I might be able to get out and try my 1DX

Awesome shot, great action. The water splash is fantastic as is the pose of the front legs.

I love it, great action and your usual amazing hi IQ...I live and work with Africa's 'Big 5' everyday and I get jealous when seeing these amazing creatures from North America. I hope to get to see them in the wild some day!

Best bear image I've seen on here for a while Chas. Love the splashes, the pose, the timing, the angle, everything.

How close were you really - given that you were in the water??

Never seen something quite like this. Great timing on the capture. With all the action and splashing, it's impressive how in focus the bear is.

Cool pic Chas. Looks like he just came off a water slide and is skimming across the surface .

Superb Chas, looks like the 1Dx is being put through it's paces well and holding it's own. It would be interesting to know what AF configuration is used in situations like this i.e. 3 or 6.

I agree on the action Chas. I have not seen such behavior in a number of years.

    Morkel,

Image is displayed full frame taken with full frame 1DX body and 500mm. I will have to check the meta data for exact distance.

This one is over the top, Chas. Being so low with the camera amplifies the strength of the image; the claws appearing from the wall of water is very artistic. And it looks like the !DX rocks.

Chas, just a quick question. Why did you say above it was such an adjustment from the 5D III to 1DX AF system as they are supposed to be the same.
I'm taking my new 5D III in today because of some metering issues but if you have time I would appreciate your perspective as I love the 5D III over the 7D, far superior.

Stan, the AF ergonomics are similar, it is the layout of other functions both externally and internally that take time to process and transpose in the field. I cannot afford to lose those fleeting moments that may mean the difference between capturing a good or great image. Meter on the bottom of the 5D3 vs rt side of 1DX, mirror lock-up function is different, AE bracketing ergonomics, etc.

No right or wrong just my preference to have similar bodies, as I always have in the past. It will cost more for sure, but it will hopefully be worth it in the long run.
