I went to my local pond in Pretoria over the weekend with the intention of a getting a decent image of one of these guys. Although slightly past me, Im happy with this, and maybe next time against a foliage BG. Taken yesterday morning.

Lovely light and plumage detail, Stu. Love those curving primaries. Calm water makes a nice BG to contrast against the warm colours of plumage and bill.

Wow. This is a very nice BIF shot. Amazing color on the wing of this species. Great exposure and detail. You can see every feather perfectly lined up. This water BG looks nice against the duck too.

Very nice indeed Stuart, very sharp detail and lovely light, the down swept wings are totally beautiful. I see no problem at all with it being slightly past the camera ?

    Stuart,

Wish we had a local pond like yours, this is a beauty and think it looks great with the water BG

I once drove four hours to visit a b.b.w.d. who was estivating, well out of range, in a small pond on a small farm in southern Ontario. Anyhow: I was too late. The crazy bird was last reported two days before I arrived. I snoozed, and I lost. As for this picture: it's terrific! You use the 100-400 with greater ease and efficacy than most and you have a whizbang shot here...

Killer light, pose, IQ and details, Stu. I love it.
This species visits central Texas in winter, but I don't have anything 1/10th as good. You've inspired me to go try to get them this coming winter.
