    Default Goofy Looking Elk

Finally!! 4 months into my new life as a dad I am slowly getting back into photography and getting the odd few hours to spend processing images.

This is something I took back in early June when I took my parents, wife, and son Ewan to the Canadian Rockies. I came across this Elk on the north end of the Bow Valley Parkway and thought it was a pretty good looking Elk to photograph.

I just bought a used 1D Mark IV so I cannea wait to get out in the field over the upcoming long weekend.

    Techs... Canon 7D w/ 400mm F5.6 @ 5.6, 1/125, ISO1250, +1/3, mounted on Wimberley Head with sidemount conversion kit and gitzo tripod.

I have started to apply a little more saturation and vibrance to my images so let me know whay you think. Have I have gone overboard?

Jamie, you've really captured an almost comical expression here but I like the character it adds to the animal. I can't really comment on the saturation as I'm not at all familiar with your colours over there. Have fun with the 1D4.

Hi Jamie, Goofy is certainly correct the grass and slight open mouth just adds to the curious expression.

I would look at toning down the branches on the RHS and try and colour balance the slight cast in the coat & or BKG. If you have the room, perhaps moving the whole crop a little to the left to gain more space for the Elk to lean into might help? Hope to see more Elk & Bears in the coming months

No excuses on the MKIV you have it all set-up now and Ewan can have the 7D.

I came across this Ek on the north end of the Bow Valley Parkway
Did you also find Surprise corner, over looking the river too?

    Jamie,

This is a fine example of the type of animal picture that I really like, not just a straight portrait but doing something interesting. Great capture, like Hilary I have no idea as to what the colours might be, but they look too me slightly over-saturated, but what do I know

    Hi Jamie,
funny expression in the face of the elk.

Detail and sharpness spot on, the colors look a tad too saturated (greens /blues).

I think the image needs a slight CR, not sure about that, but the whole body of the elk seems to shift to our LHS ?

    Beside the nits nice IQ.

    Cheers Andreas

Very cool and goofy looking elk. Good IQ. Agree with Andreas. Too me trees and body seems a bit leaned to the lhs.

Now that looks better Jamie, trust you are happier with the image now.

Hope you are enjoying the MKIV, should be better for this stuff in the future and will be more reliable in foul weather, compared to the 7D, but the 1Dx is just awesome.

Look forward to seeing more soon.

    cheers

Yes and thanks again, I was going through a bit of a phase of not being satisfied with my editing but I think I am getting on top of things again.
