    Drake Northern Shoveler-First Post

Hello Everyone. Been admiring all the great work on this forum. Good to see a honest critiquing forum, its the best way to get better at any hobby or art.

I have been a bird nut since my childhood. I spent my younger years in Ottawa, Canada then transplanted to Southern California in the early 70s.

Got involved in falconry in the 70s and have been practicing as a master falconer for over 30 years. I love photographing any thing with wings and especially mine and my friends falcons and hawks hunting game.
I shot and produced some broadcast programs on falconry in the mid 80s.

I like photographing any BIF, shorebirds and waterfowl like this shoveler. Took this last winter.

    Welcome to BPN,
Excellent flight pose captured.Very nice eye contact and head angle.I like motion blur of wings. It is difficult to get whites of this bird, you did it very well.
BG is nice but it needs some NR,(IMHO).Love the colors of Shoveler.
Northern Shovelers comes in India in October-Nov (winter visitors).

    David,

This is fine first post. Love the flight angle, sharpness, exposure and details...Also love the flying droplets.
I am not sure as I am looking at this on my work laptop, but I see some halo around the head/neck of shoveler and plus one for a round of NR on BG.

David, Welcome to BPN, and a great first post. Love the wing position, light and flight angle. Good color and well exposed. Definite halo noted, and the head seems just the tiniest bit soft on my monitor.

    Hi David, welcome to BPN!!

Beautiful wings-up pose!! I love the feathers on the near wing, and the colours look good on the subject. Sharp where it needs to (face). I suspect some work to the background was done, judging from the halo mentioned by others?

With an ongoing drought and brush fires popping up it feels alot like California here in Ottawa right now :-)

Thank you everyone for the nice comments and critiques.
I did some work to the background but the hallo did not appear or it wasnt as pronounced until I downsized it for the web. Just started posting and need to learn web skills.
    Thanks again
