    Default Blowing Mud

I photographed this elephant having a mud bath early morning at Nxai Pans, Botswana. I think a 1/250 SS would have worked really nice here showing more movement in the mud spray but this blow came unexpected.

Herewith a RP with slight level adjustments which give it a bit more depth.

A great and explosive image Hendri, full of power.

Techs look good, as you have captured both the detail and textures where it counts, but the SS is enough to blur the water/mud spraying out from the trunk. Good call on the RP and I think you could add a fraction more selective USM to define the texture along the mud caked trunk, say from the start of the mud caked trunk (head side going anti clockwise to about 10 o'clock?), but look out for any halos, seems there might be something creeping in along the outside contour of the body, nearest tusk side. Also there is a slight light patch at the trim edge of the image, more noticeable on the OP, easily fixed.

I thought about the option of B/W, but feel there is not enough contrast within the image, but Morkel might have some suggestions on that perhaps.

I trust you are pleased with the results?

A fantastic action shot. I've never seen an elephant shot like this. I like the tight crop of the head. I only with for a little more room right next to the eye. Light and colors are fantastic but might also look great in B&W. Markus

This is bloody fantastic Hendri. The mud blur is fine and works a treat. Super light and great comp with the tight crop and trunk curl. Is this FF as shot???
Repost works well - could work nicely in B&W, might play around a bit with it myself

    Hendri,

This really needs an HD image, it is a terrific moment very well captured.

Somewhere between the two posts would I think for me be best, I think the S/S works OK,

    Hi Hendri,
bloody good action shot, it is almost perfect in every aspect , from here.
The only i have is, that i share with Marcus, the eye is bit tight to the RHS edge for my taste.IF you have i would choose a different comp.

Besides that i love this image .
    Cheers Andreas

I really like the colors and the detail. I do wish for a faster SS (I seem to be the only one thinking in that direction) to have less or no blur on the mud and trunk tip...Great light and comp.

The flying mud, with the curled blowing trunk are really well captured here Hendri, very well done, the RP adding that little extra as well.

Wow this is just superb. I feel dirty just looking at all that mud splashing around. I normally do not like a very tight crop but here it works wonderfully. Great image all around
