A set-up I did along a local beach. Everything was just picture perfect for this image I had in mind....except I got a ratty-looking bird on the perch, with most of its throat feathers missing! It only took a few moments before I realized a few fledglings (young ones just out of the nest) were out and about, and this is one of them. Although artistically I would have prefered a nicely plumaged adult, I always welcome individuals of all ages and plumages for my files :-)

The background is drying vegetation and water at top.

Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, avluative metering, 1/400s., f/7.1, ISO 400 (histogram checked), natural light, handheld, small crop for comp (~80% FF).

love the ratty bird, so much more interesting than a full-feathered w.v., this one's a toughie. the perch and background are lovely. "a fine image," as they say...

    Hi Daniel,

Love the perch, details, clean BG, light and calling pose. I too like to photograph birds of different ages and plumage. Well done.

Such an elegant set up, Dan. Love that perch against that superb bg. This little guy has struck an excellent pose too.
Can't help wishing for a nicely plumaged adult, but I too would take this in a heart beat.
How did you attract him to your perch?

Great shot. I actually like the plumage in this one, it is something different. Wonderful IQ, great perch. Light and colors are beautiful.
