Another Osprey attempt
Well I had better light this time and shot at F7.1 (1/3 stop down). I didn't do much PP and didn't crop as much. I wish I had a little more room on the right of the frame, but I feel like I captured the Osprey in flight better than my last one. ...

Nice catchlight in the eye Kristofer! If you wanted to add more canvas to the right, that would be an easy fix: http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...nvas-made-easy. Overall, nice position of the bird and engagement with the eye. I'll leave others to speak to the technical details. In post, I would run some noise reduction, do selective sharpening to avoid the halo around the fore wing starting at the closest curve in the wing, and possible a shadow adjustment on the whole photo (to help brighten up the sky as well). Birds in flight are not as easy as some make it look, so just keep practicing. I still don't have one I'm really satisfied with.

Hi Kristofer- I like the feeling of action here and the comp. is fine. Good lead from Jeannean on how to add canvas. It would be a snap with this image. The light is a problem though- harsh, very directional with lots of shadows. A round of Shadows and Highlights or a run through an HDR program may help some to light and darken where needed.

Kris....nice improvement here! This image looks pretty good to me. The only thing that is really bothering is that bubble like thing ???? on the back wing. I would crop that off .The image looks much sharper than your first image. I would also add some canvas ( easy) to make a big difference right away and then crop some from the top. Also remember that D-300 performs well at ISO 800- 1000 if you follow with bit of noise reduction software like Define 2.0 from Nik software . Keep shooting! I look forward to seeing more of your work

Thanks for all your helpful thoughts! I have no idea how to do selective anything. My post before this one someone mentioned not to crop so much and that has made a big difference. The previous image I had cropped too small then expected to be able to fix some things in post. I have doing less post actually and things are looking up. I'm a chef so I work too much and can only shoot on my occasional day off so I don't always have the luxury of shooting during great light. I'll post another Osprey shot that I very much like except for a few things...
