Eastern Meadowlark in Flight
I took this photo during my week in Florida with Jim Neiger earlier this year. I was pushing the limits of available light, because these little birds require a very fast shutter speed. As a result, my DOF could have been better. Still, a cool shot of a challenging bird against a nice varied BG.

Canon 5D III, 500mm + 1.4x, f/5.6, 1/3200, ISO 1600, manual exposure, hand held

Doug - I too agree with your self-critique. Sharp where it matters.

Certainly a tricky shot to pull off, and you've done it well.

Pretty amazing, considering how fast these guys are. Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

I am surprised you could even get your lens on bird!
A tough bird to get a still shot of, in flight is very impressive.

Every thing has been said about this great flight shot. As usual magnificent image with nice lights and background.

Hi Doug, hand holding your 500mm and tracking this missile is no mean feat, so very well done for getting this shot. Sharp where it counts, and I do like the colours on his head. I also like the softer colours in the BG.

sweet shot and good call on the techs given the conditions.

Love the sharpness, light and details. Well exposed from smooth & beautiful background. I liked the composition as well.

no meagre feat at all, Doug! did you crop this one a lot?

Wow, this is great. I can imagine how hard it is. I tried to get shorts of skylarks which are not closely related but of similar size and I never could get them in the frame in a reasonable size. I like the soft light and the wing pose. Markus

Thanks Morkel. It's almost 50% of horizontal full frame (over 2500 pixels wide).

Pretty cool that you got it. I like the pose and slightly puffy body
