Taken this morning, I moved up river to get a bit different dark forest BG.
I am becoming flight obsessed to point of wanting a real flight lens!
A like this pose a lot.

Another nice one. I keep thinking I will go out and get one of these myself but I think you may have the "real flight lens" and I do not have a 300 or 2X. Are you using the in camera crop?

Laurie, the 300 2.8 is a very nice lens, and I do alright with the TC's, but I would like a bit more reach.
The 1.7 tc works very well but is only 500mm, the 2x not as well at 600mm, I am thinking about the 500 or 600.
I do not use the in camera crop, I shoot all FX these days, I can crop better myself, and for Flight photos,
I don't clip as many wings.

    Dan,

You have been getting such good flight shots I'm not sure a different lens would be better. I can't had hold a 500 and I get a lot faster focus without the converter (1.4 or 1.7) so thought your combo must be better than mine. Try renting before you buy!

Hi Dan. You've been doing great with your Osprey images! I love this pose too, and I'm pretty sure I posted a similar pose last year. Nice exposure control (the flat light helps), and good sharpness. I might boost the saturation a little. I know the 300mm is a great lens, but a 500 or a 600 is the gold standard for flight. The AF speed will be much improved over a 300 with a TC, and you'll be able to nail much more challenging shots.

Though it would be fun to see what you would do with a "true flight" lens--you do pretty awesome with a 300mm! This is really wonderful, Dan. I just love that topside view and the arc of the wings. Nice job on the comp.

    Dan,

I like this and whatever you are using it seems to work well. I have a long lens but cannot get the birds in frame or flying in an acceptable direction, but I will keep on trying.

Hi Dan, another excellent inflight pose from your 'Osprey family' and love the wing position in this. Good feather detail throughout, and the Osprey is separated nicely from the BG.

I like this pose as well.
I like the curled up primary tips as well.
I would boost the saturation just a bit or add a couple of points of black to the neutrals and blacks in selective coloring.
Good exposure as well and nice BG,
    Gail

very cool shot Dan. Def look into getting a Nikon 500VR it's an excellent lens to handhold. I used for a little with a D3S and it was wonderful. You deserve it!

You're doing great with these, Dan!
I handhold my Nikkor 500mm VR all the time, not that heavy and gives you a good workout .
As Arash mentioned - a cracker flight lens.

Fantastic osprey shot with wonderful wing pose and great sharpness, colors and light.
I agree with Doug about his advice. A 500mm or 600mm lens makes a huge difference. I sometimes use my 4/300L IS for flight shots when birds are close but
do most of my flight shots with a 4/500L IS because I need the reach, even with the EOS 7D.
