Default Red-necked grebe among the water colors and squiggles

Hello folks, I enjoy taking pictures like these, as evidenced by my posting! What say you? I'm rather happy with the composition as is, but certain folks on the forum do have a way of persuading me towards normalcy with their compositional ideas. I will welcome your compositional time and trouble, that's for sure! Anyhow, this picture was taken with the Canon 7D and 70-300L at 300mm, iso500, 1/1000, f6.3. This is approximately 80% of the original capture. I was done with my obsessive grebe shooting as they had swum too far away. But then the light changed and the water filled with squiggles. I had a camera and so snapped. I am a man with many regrets, more each day, but I not regret having taken this picture. Anyhow: it's still July! Greetings, all!

    Jack,

I like it the way it is. The water would look great (colors and pattern) even without the bird. At first I thought you should crop off some of the bottom but the square crop is growing on me so I would stick with it.

There are a couple of spots on the bottom left that look like they may be on your camera not the water - I would remove them.

Hi Jack, good swimming pose and HA from the little guy. You could interpret this image as the grebe the first across the finish line, so the Im fine with the placement as is. With regards to all round space, I would take about a third off the bottom, and crop off the orange band at the top.

I too would like to see some off the bottom. I'm troubled by the white line in the water as I feel it draws the eye away from the subject.

Laurie: many thanks for your comments and for pointing out those spots, which were certainly on my camera! Must have that sensor cleaned! Stuart, thanks for the crop suggestions.
