Just cant compare the animals in Oz compared to what I see on here, but at least these guys are common and wont try to chew your leg off , OK so they're not awesomely ferocious......just kinda fluffy

This one however was actually taken from my Kayak on a trip away a couple of months back and was perched in a tree on the waters edge. Not a place one generally expects to find them, but very common over much of temperate Australia, including often venturing into suburbia and backyards.....and sadly dodging cars

Nikon D300 + Tokina AT-X 300 f2.8....300mm, f5, 1/250, ISO 500, -0.3EV, no flash, hand held, slight crop to tidy, selective slight sharpen

It's great to see a Koala (a wild one!) on the forum, Phil. No need for "ferocious" all the time as it's sometimes time for cute and cuddly too. Incidentally, some of my favourite shots personally are not of predators but mere antelopes and such...

I like the clear view we have here, and the cute expression. Sharpness looks good for your chosen SS which could've been a bit troublesome given your effective focal length as well as the fact that you were on a kayak .

Does it need a hint of warmth and upping the exposure? Seems a tad cold/underexposed to me?

Hi Phil, it's not about comparing, more diversity and I guess, showcasing what amazing animals we have and their behavioural habits

OK so they're not awesomely ferocious......just kinda fluffy
    and slightly incontinent

Firstly congrats on getting what you did from such a position, I'd always be worried about an eskimo roll just at the crucial moment. looking at the image I feel it could do with some more selective sharpening and perhaps a touch of one of Roberts Tonal'luminosity tweaks just to give it a bit more depth and punch, but watch the whites as they looks blown, or perhaps just need some more recovery? Also I might suggest going for a square crop, not an option I personally like, but I think it might help the subject, cropping some of the area left & right, especially with regard to the highlight on the right. By doing so, I think/fell the 'look to camera' engages more with the reader, just my take.

Nice to see something from 'Down under'.

    Hi Phil,
good to see different stuff in here !!!
Love these Koalas, i have seen them myself in the wild.Roaring above my tent like ****,and then on the other hand quite boring to photograph (mostly) due to very slow movement.
Like the composition and the colors, agree with Steve about the sharpening and the highlights.
    Cheers Andreas
