Another shot of a male Mistletoe bird, but this one showing better the blue sheen on the dorsal feathers that show up with the light from the right direction. Pretty dark forest area and only onboard flash used.

    Screwball settings, but they worked OK ?..... Nikon D300 + Tokina AT-X f 2.8 + Kenko Pro 300 1.4 x TC { non registering }.....420 mm, 1/20, f10, ISO400. -1.0 EV....hand held at close range, slight crop and basic PS treatment

Pretty impressive for an image taken at 1/20 and the colors and pose are nice .

Nice one Phil, love the way the colours on your bird make it contrast with the background which I might add has a "niceness" of its own.

A tad more localised sharpening on the Misteltoe's beak maybe?

I'd like to be able to say cloneing out the lower limb would be nice but what the heck, in wildlife we take what we can get.

Beautiful bird. It looks like it must be difficult to capture with short focal length. Nice colors. If mine, I'd move the bird a bit to the right in the frame. Good head position. Light is tricky but you have handeld it well.

Great appropriate name for this guy.
He is a bit big in the frame ( personal taste issue) for me.
The head is not quite tack sharp and if you are going to be this close it needs to be tack sharp. I would try to sharpen the area around the eye a bit more.
I would also burn the bright area of upper mandible of beak.
    I like the BG colors.

nice catch in tough conditions with shade and overhead light, the head came out a bit soft but it can handle more sharpening. A better flash might help in these conditions. The 2nd branch is a bit distracting you may want to consider removing it. Hope you get better conditions next time!
