Setup in my yard. D700, 300mm, tripod. 1/500, f6.3, iso640. Adjusted exp., cropped in ACR. Levels adj on white on wing, S/H, noise reduction on BG, USM in CS3. I hate these variably lit backgrounds but this is the best image I have been able to get of this bird. I had to adjust the size to 900 X 648 and quality 9 to get this to fit.
Hi Jack, I like how the juvi woodpecker is holding onto the perch - good view of the grip of the foot. Good placement in the frame, and I do like the scattered bits of foliage on the perch. If anything, I would maybe blend away the three larger specular spots in the BG.
Another very nice job, Jack. The perch is really nice and I like the comp as well, a little different with the bird a bit smaller in
the frame than usual, a nice wider view.
Jack, I am extremely envious of this capture. I followed 2 RHW nests this season and was unable to capture a fledgling outside of the nest cavity. I think you have done a terrific job with this capture. I love how you set it in its environment. The BG, perch and vegetation all work so well, and he has a great pose and angle. Although the whites do appear a bit bright, they weren't hot in PS but you could always recover the a bit more in ACR if you were so inclined.
