A simple cedar waxwing among the shadows and so forth
Greetings folks,
Although my skills and lens were no match of the insane-o speediness of whizzing cedar waxwings, I did enjoy taking many portraits of the fine sitters when they would briefly sit among the leaves. Taken the other day with the Canon 7D and 70-300L at 300mm. iso400, 1/1600, f5.6. This is roughly 80% of the original capture. I'll certainly appreciate your thoughts and suggestions and ideas; believe it!
Hi Jack,
I like the shadowy BG and the raised crest as well as good feather detail.
I do wish for a better HA ( you had to know that was coming!) It also looks like the nictitating membrane is partially closed- not a huge deal but if you have a frame with the eye clear that would be better,
gail
Nice bg and sharp details. Love the crest. I too wish for a better HA.
I'd definitely do a healthy crop from the top, a crop from the left and add some to the right, if possible. (I don't have anything against square comps in general)
One of my favorite birds. Agree with Gail's points, also would crop some from the top. Very sharp, these birds aren't always easy to extract feather detail.
Ha! Which almost means HA which means, I think, head angle. One man's meat is another man's poison, as always. I will never ever ever get into head angle arguments with anyone, but I will say this: many thanks for your constructive criticism, folks, and your ideas in the province of cropping. Gail: you've got sharp eyes and I think you're quite right...the n. membrane is very much closed and I'm sure I must have a few open-eyed frames as well. My eyes don't see well enough. Thanks, folks!

My only nit pic would be the eye with what looks like the membrane partially covering it...raised crest is great as is the color....shoot me for saying it hehehe.....but not keen on the square crop and if it were mine I's trim some both top and bottom
Thanks Phil! Actually I had no idea how to crop this one and very much appreciate your input. Such pictures can be cropped-for-composition in many different ways. I'm not fussy as most but do find that there are many good sets of eyes on this forum. Often I am reminded about pesky handed-down aesthetic ideas, viz., rule-of-thirds, and in many (if not most) cases the good folks are right as rain! Keep it pleasing!

Nice details, well exposed, and the subject pops nicely from the background. Love the raised crest. My preference is like most here: less at top, and a better head angle. Either cropped more at top, or left as is, both would be better by having the subject placed further left of the frame IMO.
