Here's something I'd like some honest feedback on - especially compositionally...
I left the perch to give some context, but the RHS is edge-of-frame (I was shooting vertically as I was going for portraits when this guy took off). With the blue sky, I could add canvas if I wanted to (though those who know my workflow ethic will know that I probably won't ). Question is - does it work for you? It works for me, but I am obviously emotionally tied to the image, so just putting it out there .
Taken in the Kalahari desert. The skies there really are that blue!
Hi Morkel - with the inclusion of the perch it works for me. It's clear that it has just taken off. If the perch wasn't there then I would think it needed more room to the right. Great sharpness and I like the wing position. There are a couple of white spots to the left of the perch.
Morkel, I agree with Rachel's inputs. Comp works for me. Nice exposure and sharpness too! I also see the white spots Rachel mentioned to the left of the perch. Good work!
Difficult one to compose, but despite there being little room on the right it does to to balance out well, sharpness etc is all good, I guess my only only thought would be a slight shame the bird is not closer to the branch to better indicate it has just left it
Excellent wing position and a great look at the black shoulders.
I would take a bit off the LHS- to where the white spots are. I am Ok with space on the right.
I would lighten the eye that is in shadow a bit.
Great shot in any case,
Gail
Ditto Rachael's comments. Comp works with the perch included -- I just wish the perch had a bit more character, but the bird is great, especially the eye.
The perch doesn't do much for me, it looks like a decent crop now, but I wouldn't mind just a tight BIF photo, it is sharp as can be with
a nice angle.
Comp works well as is, and I like the inclusion of the perch. Exposure is spot on and you have a lot of details in your whites. The bird's one eye is very powerful.
Thanks for your comments and feedback, folks. I might try cropping tighter from the LHS but for my tastes I won't lose the perch.
The white spots are probably loose feathers that came off when he launched - there in the RAW as well and it's not dust blots.
Morkel, I would crop just left of the perch. The perch is what saves the comp for me. Excellent details, and I love the wonderful red eye on these birds.
