    Default Piping Plover chick

I was out on the beach early this morning hoping to find a chick or two. I saw a friend's jeep but did not see him on the beach. I shot images of adults but did not find a chick. About two hours later I tried another section of the beach and saw 3 chicks scampering around. By then the light was harsh but I shot what was in front of me. This was horizontally and I cropped a bit off the top and bottom and then narrowed it to try to show "little chick in big world."

Love the low angle. Nice head on look. Good job in getting a clean background.
Was it at the Sandy Beach?

The extra space on the top works well here IMO. It reflects how small and vulnerable the little bird is.

Very nice, Allan. The white fluffball stands out nicely against the bg, and the comp works well for me. I'm sure this happened to all of us - it did to me the other day - wasting the best hours of good light searching for your target only to find it after the light got harsh. But you managed to get your shot.

I looked at the image and almost did not see this crop.

What an adorable puff ball, and I really like the vertical comp here. I do feel however that you have a too much space on the top, making the photo look elongated. Since this was originally a horizontal, I think I would put the chick a tad to one side or the other with the exact same amount of space on the bottom and a little off the top. Your other choice would be a similar horizontal. It would be fun to have one of each. Whites look a tad hot, but that's an easy fix b/c they're not crawling too far up the right side.

I like the crop as is, but as Marina points out there are other options too that could be fun to explore. Harsh light, and a an odd circle directly beside the subject are to things that I would tame in post.

Here is a repost. Sorry it took so long. I did adjust the crop, get rid of a patch of poor cloning, and reduced highlights.
