South Africa, Timbavati reserve, May 2012. This "grand dame" was the grandmother of the Machattan pride, she very old, with two grown females, and seven youngsters all around year old, (totaling 10 lions). The two females did all the hunting/killing for pride.
Taken late in afternoon as pride slept/lounged in river bed sand. I took maybe 20 shots of her and she never looked into the camera. Guess we bored her.
Nikon D200, 1/320 sec, f8, ISO400, 300mm on the 70-300 zoom. Yes, it is cropped perfectly square (here about 70% of total frame). Color, saturation, contrast, etc adjusted in Photoshop to taste.
