    Default Grandma

Yes, YALP (Yet Another Lion Portrait), sorry.
South Africa, Timbavati reserve, May 2012. This "grand dame" was the grandmother of the Machattan pride, she very old, with two grown females, and seven youngsters all around year old, (totaling 10 lions). The two females did all the hunting/killing for pride.
Taken late in afternoon as pride slept/lounged in river bed sand. I took maybe 20 shots of her and she never looked into the camera. Guess we bored her.
Nikon D200, 1/320 sec, f8, ISO400, 300mm on the 70-300 zoom. Yes, it is cropped perfectly square (here about 70% of total frame). Color, saturation, contrast, etc adjusted in Photoshop to taste.

Tom, this portrait has the best IQ and clarity I've seen in a post from you in a long time
The light was good. The direct gaze is good. The detail/colour spot on.
Might just dodge some shadows in the nose to open it up a bit...and do some more NR on the BG?

    Hi Tom,
like the colors, contrast, detail here in this portrait.Eye contact also nice.
I would crop a bit more of the top,to get the eyes i bit more out of the centre. And as Morkel said run NR on BG.
    Anyhow a nice portrait.
    Cheers Andreas

Certainly is Morkel, Tom have you been lulling us along all the time. Not sure about the ear posture, she looks a little aggressive.

    Well done Tom.

Her right ear is turned as if picking up something over there, I guess. In all my shots of her this head/body position that ear is like this, But when she turns 3/4 profile the ear came forward. That shot also nice but I won't bother you all with another YALP of same animal. To bad the seven "cubs" at around a year are not all that "photogenic". They are too big to be cute cubs and not big enough to be impressive lions. They are also all seven male which is unfortunate for the pride.
Had not given much attention to BG noise, could simple go back and use BG before sharpening probably.
