Here is a black bear cub climbing down from the top of a tree from my recent trip to Canadian Rockies.

Laurie - very cute and good eye contact despite the head being down. The tips of the cub's fur look greyish and I'm wondering if that's how it was or if its a result of processing. I would apply another round of selective sharpening to the cub.

    Hi Laurie,
this image has a lot of potential.Like the content very much, really cute looking this little guy.
The bear needs some sharpening and mid tone contrast.Parts of of the bark looks kind of blue !?

Beside these points i like it very much.

    Rachel and Andreas,

I have gone back and reprocessed this photo, first I changed the white balance to warm it up thinking this would get rid of the blue bark and maybe the grey fur. This did make the tree needles more yellow that I thought they should be. I also adjusted the contrast in the midtones - this is something I have never done before - I hope it helps. I did not re-sharpen. I guess I could try to sharpen the face seperately but have not liked the results on other cubs so did not try it here. What do you think?

    Hi laurie,
you reduced the blues in the bark ,good step. For me the rest of the image is just a tad too warm, just personal.
But you did not give the bear a real mid tone punch, that `s what this little guy needs to stand out more.I think the needles are sharper and have more contrast than the main subject (the bear?).
So i tried to make it clear by RP what i think the bear should look like in terms of contrast.(not color)
I would even try to make the bear sharper .
    WDYT?

    Cheers Andreas

    Andreas,

To me your version looks to sharp. This is a cub and I think he should be soft and cuddly. I did do another version where I added a little more detail to his face but it is softer than yours.

Hi Laurie, I personally like/prefer the OP and it offers truck loads of 'cute factor' as Rachel eluded too, however a slight adjustment to reduce the Blue in the bark and some selective sharpening on key parts of the cub will move it on to where I think it should be.

I think your RP is just to 'warm' and the choice of changing the WB I feel would not be the route to go. Andreas RP is to contrasty & saturated likewise your last post, I feel it's too saturated.

    Hey Laurie and Steve,
i took the RP not the OP,the reason for the colors as saturated.
I only wanted to show the way to go on the bear,as i only worked on the bear!!!
I know it is too much, but in OP there is no differentiation in the fur.My thinking was giving him a bit of a punch.I would for sure make it less in proper PP.

    Cheers Andreas
