On a whim, I decided to play around with different blend modes in Photoshop, to see what sort of effects I could come up with. I processed this one in PS, then NIK Color Efex Pro, and then finally choose the Linear Light blend mode. I like the almost painting look to it. Is it too abstract or does it work in your opinion? I'm curious to hear your input.

Abstract? Yes. Too abstract? No. The image is well composed. I like not only the curves within the water caused by the bird walking but also the overall curved shape made up of them and the shadow. With the high contrast of the bird, I don't mind its shadow being cut off. It's really only a supporting element in the background. Besides, it's fairly indistinct, anyway. The color in the legs is distracting to me, though, and I see no advantage in having them be the only colored part of the image. I'd have desaturated them.
Cynthia, I don't find it abstract at all. It is easy to identify the bird. It is, however, OOTB by virtue of the "threshold" look. I am liking the legs as the only color element, as I find my eye starting there and then moving up and out of the frame. I like it!
Hi Cynthia; some good comments have already been made...I'm still mulling over the color on the legs...and I would have liked to have seen more of the reflection as well. My other comment is that the high contrast makes the belly/chest of the bird fade into the background in one spot...that's distracting to me, but it's more of a sense of personal vision. Nicely processed...I like the abstract quality of the image. Well done!
Cynthia, I like this one! I might evict most of the reflection if it were mine since it isn't complete. I do wish the bird were angled more towards us but this is a nice view of it's bil. The threshold look is lovely and works well for this image. I like the color in the legs and would just desaturate it slightly.
Very creative look Cynthia. I like Denise's suggestion to de-saturate the leg color a little. I too wish for more reflection as well.
