Tin Goose

Our local photography group took a field trip last week to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. What a place! One day wasn't nearly enough. This scene was part of the Ford Tri-Motor exhibit. You can see parts of the plane, which was nicknamed the Tin Goose, but I was more taken with the car, figures, and other props. Most of the luggage you see was used as a barricade. Very clever.

ISO 800, f/22 (for depth of field and for starbursts), zoom lens at 17mm
eight-exposure HDR -- 1 EV intervals

Processing . . .

• exposures processed in Photomatix with the object of getting a good histogram; all effects were applied in Photoshop
• Topaz Simplify -- preset based on BuzSim but with less saturation
• white balance correction -- a lot of it because of the array of different types of indoor lights
• Nik Silver Efex conversion to b&w applied with Darken blend mode -- revealed reds, yellowish browns in the floor, and yellow on the wing
• adjustment layer for overall desaturation and additional desaturation of yellow and red
• The figures in the exhibit were off white. The colors were applied to them as individual masked solid fill layers -- Soft Light or Color blend modes.

• Fractalius

Excellent! Compostion and perspective extraordinary, but I mostly like the film noir style pallet that matches the subject so well. Well done HDR, and I like the way you used simplify and fractalius. regards~Bill

Dennis, it's nice to see you posting here again. I've missed your work. This is really nice - the added bits of color, the combination of Simplify and fractalius, the composition and especially the photo filter toning. I hope you post more of these:S3:

Dennis, I love what you did with the Fractalius. The HDR work is perfect. The starbursts are an added bonus and great thinking to go to f/22. Wonderful scene and so very nicely captured! It is nice to see you posting again :S3:

I use outlining in most of my images. Probably a carryover from so much time using coloring books in my childhood. :S3: For the last six months, or so, I've pretty much relied on the Stylize Line Art option in Alien Skin Snap Art for outlining and the detail that goes with it. The lines in that filter tend to be loose, rather than adhering closely to changes of tone in the image. That's fine in many cases, but it sure didn't work with this image. Now that Fractalius can be used with 64-bit, it was easy enough to give it a try. After moving all the sliders around, I got a b&w preset that looked like it might work except that the preview showed a lot of moire patterns. Fortunately, they didn't materialize when the filter was applied. The result was great outlining and a needed punch to the black and white parts of the car. I'm going to have to try it out on other images, now.

This is a lovely image, like the effect...its like something you'd see on a movie billboard from the twenties....love the car...very well done
