Now that my 7D is "visiting" Canon for its 5th time in about 2 years to have some AF issues addressed, I am thinking about investing in a 1D Mark III but wanted to make sure that it was still a good (better?) option for birds in flight. Yes, I do realize that the current Mark IV would be the way to go but I just can't swing it financially...
Thoughts, opinions, suggestions are welcome... so long as they don't involve switching to Nikon :S3: :S3:

Sorry to hear about your problem(s) with the 7D. I own two of them and had the autofocus quit on one of them a few months ago. Other than that, they have worked quite well for me.
At one time or another I owned (2) Mark III's and even after all the mods to these cameras, I did not find the autofocus system to be that dependable attempting to photograph birds-in-flight against busy backgrounds.
I'm sure others may have different opinions, but on the Canon side of the fence I would rate the 1DMark IV with the best autofocus system available for bird photography. I would rate the 7D as second and the Mark III as third. I know others who still own Mark III's and love them, but I have no love-loss for this camera.

I just "bit the bullet" and bought a pre-owned "low mileage" 1D IV for a great price. I don't think I'll regret it :S3:
