Inspired by Andrew

Andrew's recent post Bracken Fern Fract really caught my eye. I loved the Fractalius effect, the subject, the colors and of course the high key look. I set out today to try to recreate the look by taking inspiration and not copying it completely. I tried to remember what I liked about his image and the three key elements were the Fractalius, the fern and the high key look. So I decide to give it a try. My version is in no way a comparison but more of a different take on a similar look. Well as it turns out mine is not very similar at all...I do like the curved lines in Andrew's better and the more graphic look to his. I will keep my eye out for a different shaped fern leaf. :S3: My fern is Baker fern.

Denise, this has a lot going for it...you can see the similarities between the two works, but both have a stamp of "individuality" that makes them each uniquely the vision of the two artists. What I really like about yours is the subtle gradations of green through the leaves, giving it a sense of depth and a subtle play of light and shadow. Nicely composed...I might have left more of the fern visible on the LHS; it may have accentuated the slight curve and let the eye flow through the image a bit more; I'm not sure, I'd have to see it. Nicely done!

I think your processing on this looks great, Denise. Love the different shades of green and that it is not too sharpened. I think both John's critique and your own self-critique bring up good points and observations. I agree with you, regarding trying different shapes. Having a more interesting shape or curved line to the comp combined with this processing would put it over the top!

Hi Denise, I am pleased to have inspired you to create this beautiful fern fract. I love the little curve at the bottom and the fract work is killer. I knew the sharper edges would really look cool. Placing the frond pointing down was a great idea for the comp also. Love it! :S3:

Denise, nothing to apologize for here - the image is very appealing and artistic. The processing gave it the look of pastels and the colors are perfect for that medium. I can't wait to see what else you come up with. :c3:
