Canon 70-300

I met up with Chris Dodds again this year and he had just obtained the lens and was very excited about it. I bought one a couple of weeks later, had it stolen, then bought another one. It's fantastic. For those with the 70-200 f2.8 version and even the f4 version, there may be little reason to pick up the 70-300L but I was literally starting from scratch to rebuild my kit and for me there was no question that the 70-300L was a match for my 70-200/4 in IQ and of course beat it in zoom range and versatility. Many seem to sneer at the variable f-ratio (4-5.6) of the lens but I don't mind this at all. I usually shoot the lens at f6.3-f8 anyway.

Love the new 70-300. I'm about to list a 70-200 for sale; just haven't decided if I'm going to sell the f/2.8 or the f/4. Then again I may sell both!

Hi, Jay. I too love this lens (even with a couple of glaring faults). You can read my review from back in June here -- my conclusions still stand today. I'm using it and loving it for a variety of nature photography applications.

I bought mine after seeing Doug's results at the 2011 West Coast Flight Workshop.
Super compact for travel.
The 70-300 is razor sharp.
I don't use a TC - I have other lenses I'd use bare instead.
Like others, I rarely mount the 70-200 2.8 II any longer...

Those of you getting ready to sell your f/2.8s, How much concern about the 1 stop loss of light, and how many have tested with the Kenko tele?

When Doug showed me his files from Costa Rica with the 70-300 I was impressed, I am equally impressed with the sharpness of my 70-200 MKII + 1.4X TCIII as well. I haven't found a good side-by-side comparison. I would be interested if someone has tested these two against each other.

I think the 70-200 Doug is selling is the MK I(?) The difference between MKI and MKII is significant.
