Canon 500 f4 lens hood attachment failure

I have joined the ranks of those who's lens hood attachment has failed. When I put away the 500 the flange from the hood that fits into the groove of the lens barrel was gone (how the hood stayed on is a mystery) along with what I presume must be a circlip that attaches the flange to the screw mechanism.

I presume my only solution is to call Canon and obtain a replacement module (alternative suggestions welcome) but I was wondering if and BPNers have any innovative work-arounds for affixing the lens hood so I can keep using the lens in the interim as this is prime moose and swan season up here.

The original hood sells for $547 at Adorama, so it's probably an expensive replacement. The part number for the lock is CY1-4292 according to the parts catalog (you can google it).
Maybe you can try getting a replacement lock and installing it yourself, or maybe you can ask Canon to do the repair for you.
There is one seller on Ebay that sells the lock for $105 (auction 390299921731), which could be a quick option, but I am not 100% sure it's the right part. Good luck, anyway.

Good luck I had a similar problem the split washer was bent and mine too came apart but luckily I managed to fix it.The parts are astronomically expensive. I would consider buying a replacement hood - not a canon hood, there is a camo hood available but I can't remember where I saw it but it was comparatively cheap. I think you will find one on the USA websites.

Yeah, It just amazed me that a $500+ hood that had one moving part, a simple screw, and they managed to mess it up.
Boy was I upset when it locked on my lens and wouldn't unscrew!! (it was replaced)

I know how you feel, my circlip has failed twice in 5 years and the replacement cost is ludicrous.

Thanks all for the useful tips. My googling had indicated this was a non-to-rare problem and the quick response confirmed that conclusion. The failure of the lens hood clip is annoying for many reasons, a major one being that without being able to attach the hood one has no lens cap which kind of precludes heading out with the lens. A third-party lens cap is a top-priority in addition to the hood fix.

Luis, I think the ebay listing is the wrong piece. It is listed for a different lens and looks different. Good try.

Ken, Yikes twice! Guess you are a master of repair. The pics in the parts manual are a bit confusing to me (none show the inside flange that fits into the groove on the lens). Is CY1-4292 and entire unit of the screw, clip, and flange that inserts as a complete module (but does not include the two inside screws that hold it to the hood).

I see a flurry of purchases all for one simple weak link.

Th part number you have is correct and of course it excludes the screws, but then what can you expect for 60 pounds!

I did the CY1-4292 order and repair from Canon for my 500 hood last year, seemed overpriced to me also.

The knurled aluminium knob you use to secure the hood in place is fixed to its shaft by a steel spring pin. The pin rusts (mine on my 400DO has) and therefore will eventually fail resulting in the knob falling off and the once captive shaft and securing clip coming away. I would just purchase the part and fix the hood. This has to be much cheaper than buying a replacement hood.

Re. lens caps, pretty well everyone I know throws the stupid and ultra-clunky Canon leatherette lens hood away and buys a "Tupperware" plastic cap from here:

They also sell a lens cap set for the Canon 300/2.8 which also happens to fit the 400/4 DO.

Hi Guys,
I was lucky with mine. It got stuck and the wife had a go at it and was able to get it off with just a couple of small scratches. I found the circlip that went flying on the floor and was able to bend it back in shape. Haven't had any trouble with it since. The secret is not over-tightening it. Only as tight as the tip of your finger and thumb can make it and no more! Over-tightening it puts undue pressure on the clip and causes it to fail and then you either loose the clip or the clip distorts causing the whole assembly to become jammed on.

As a matter of interest my 400DO hood, which is constructed the same as my 500/4 hood does not have a circlip as shown. What are you guys referring to when you say "circlip"?
