The black background is "created" within the shot. What appears black is the mangrove understory at the beach. If the subject in the frame was more distant and close to the "horizon," I would have likely increased the exposure bias especially with the bird relatively dark. In this case, the setting used was required to keep the bird as presented from being blown out in the bright light. I was lucky I wasn't shooting a pure white bird as I would have misjudged the circumstances I'm sure even after hearing Artie hollering out the setting required under a similar situation fortuitous for all those within earshot when he was at Ding Darling NWR in Feb. 2010 . . .
