gail this is really good image you have captured. loved the landing pose including open stretched wings. the angle of light in your favor. i might crop 100 pixel or little more from bottom..
may be from your techs you could have gone little more wider on ISO to achieve more better speed to freeze the wings as well.
overall really beautiful frame this is.
Hi Gail. Putting the 500 to good use. Great action captured, with good wing and head position, and feet just touching the water. As Mital says, the bird's angle works nicely with the light angle. Nice and sharp on the head. A bit more SS would have helped.
Gail, good swept back wing position, and just love the tippy toe pose, as if the water feels too cold. Seems like sweet light, with warm colours, although there could be some hot spots down the side of the body.
Nice pose, I love the foot out of the water. Good warm light on the turnstone (just a few highlights that could be toned down). Too bad there was a bumpy wave in the water just in front of the feet.
Although I don't mind some movement blur in the wings I agree raising the ISO more would have help freeze them just a bit more. Having said this, at 1/800s I probably would have been at the setting too...unless I saw it bathing I would have quickly dialed in the change in anticipation of the flap...just something to think about next time out.
Great pose you captured, Gail, and love the light and texture to water on this. Good suggestions, and congratulations on getting your 500!!
I like the sharp focus on the face and the perfect EXP. Only way to make it better was to get lower (which was either difficult or impossible, probably the latter).

I could have gotten lower but just as the bird landed in the water, my shirt got pinched between the tripod leg and little "thingamabob" that releases the tripod leg:eek3: and I didn't want to rip my shirt so I didn't lower the tripod!!!

I agree re:SS. I actually was anticipating the jump after the bath but thought 1/800 would be enough. Lesson learned...
Better your shirt than the skin on your neck....
At ISO 400 you did have room for more SS. However this is an excellent image as presented. I love the soft side-light, wing flap, and water color.

I agree raising the ISO would have been an option but I also tend to keep it not any higher that 400 if I can, when shooting with 7D.

I am completely comfortable at ISO 800 and never even think twice about setting it there on my 7D. A good proportion of my images posted on BPN are at ISO 800, and in print they look great too. Not trying to pat myself on the back here, just saying the 7D is alot better than what most think.:S3:
